Crossing the tropical Atlantic, on the hunt for zooplankton
Sampling tiny critters, using nets and cameras
When: 08.09. - 13.10.2015
Where: From Mindelo, Cape Verde to Recife, Brazil.
A long term student assistant job with Rainer Kiko and Pieter Vandromme opened the door for this tropical cruise on the RV Meteor (M119). I had been involved in sorting pre-processed imagery of zooplankton sampled by Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) for about a year when I got the chance to do some more hands on work.
On the cruise I was part of the zooplankton team, handling the UVP as well as the multinet.
Apart from the work, there were a lot of flying fish escaping the squid feeding frenzy. Also I learned that the Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) are amazing (and just so much more beautiful alive).
The zooplankton collectors at the end of the multinet.
