Monitoring the bentic fauna of the Arctic with the AWI

Where: Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard.
Shortly after returning from the Indian Ocean, I headed further north and joined the benthic ecologist Jürgen Laudien from the AWI as scientific diver on an expedition to Svalbard. There, we monitored a long term succession experiment and investigated the ecology of the arctic bentho-fauna.
Besides semi-in situ respiration experiments, maintenance of the experimet setup and sampling of bivalves at Kongsfjord (79°N), the trip included gun training (polar bear emergency training) and a snowstorm that would delay the return flight by 5 days.
